CGEU 2006 Conference Visitor Information

15th Annual Coalition of Graduate Employee Unions Conference Philadelphia, August 11-13, 2006

The conference will be held at the University of Pennsylvania, which is in West Philadelphia. The U-Penn Campus is a very short subway/bus/trolley ride from Center City and about a 15 minute walk from downtown. Registration will take place at the GET-UP office, which is at 3637 Chestnut Street. We are in the United Lutheran Church at 37th and Chestnut - you will need to go around back and use the northern entrance. The streets of Philadelphia form a grid - the N-S street numbers go up as you go west. The E-W streets have names that are not numerical (Chestnut, Spruce, etc.). The area around the university is also called 'University City.'

Getting Here and Away

Flying: The Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), seven miles from Center City, serves more than 25 airlines and is very convenient. If you can’t fly into Philly for some reason, Newark is your next best bet and there is an easy NJ Transit/SEPTA or Amtrak monorail/train connection to Philadelphia that will take about 1 1/2 hours. Train from PHL Airport: There are trains from the airport to Center City every half hour and they cost $6 each way. The second stop after you leave the airport is University City - get off here. You will be at 33rd and Spruce. You need to walk 4 blocks west (away from the river) and 4 long blocks north. Taxi from PHL Airport: a taxi from the airport to our office (just tell the driver to take you to 37th and Chestnut) should be about $25. We might be able to pick you up at the airport: If you notify us of your arrival time in advance and call us when you arrive, we may be able to pick you up since the airport is a ten minute drive away.

Train: Amtrak, NJ Transit, and SEPTA serve 30th Street Station, which is at 30th and Market and is about a ten minute walk from our office - seven blocks west and two blocks south).

Bus: The bus depot is at 10th and Filbert, which is about a 25 minute walk from our office or a $8 cab ride.

Driving Yourself: You can plug in our address (3637 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA) to any driving directions program and there will be on-street parking available near our office.

Getting Around

Mass transit is abundant and easy in Philadelphia. Green line trolleys run from Center City to 36th and Sansom, which is a block from our office. You can catch the trolleys at 13th and Market, 15th and Market, 19th and Market, 22nd and Market, and 30th and Market. The Blue Market-Frankfort subway line runs to 34th and Market, which is a few blocks from our office. The #21, #42, and #40 buses run to U-Penn's campus from Center City. The fare is $2 cash or tokens are $1.30 at some stations. Taxis are abundant and relatively cheap. Walking - Best of all - Philly is a very 'walkable' city - you can walk most every place you’ll need to go.
